X is on the rise.
After the company’s successful “mutuals” update, it has launched Mentions Boost, a new advertising feature that lets brands pay to promote organic posts that mention them.
The tool was announced by X Head of Product Nikita Bier, who emphasized that paid promotion of organic mentions will be clear and disclosed. The new feature is available to Premium Business accounts.
Why This Matters:
Word-of-mouth and reviews have always been the most effective ways to drive interest in a product or brand. X is building on that and bringing it into its own environment here.
The concept isn’t entirely new, of course. TikTok already makes it relatively easy for brands to boost creator content through tools like Spark Ads (and, in some cases, more guerrilla methods). X is essentially doing the same, reinforcing the idea that social platforms increasingly see user conversations as valuable ad inventory.
For marketers, Mentions Boost could make customer advocacy, influencer content, and even favorable media coverage (!) more valuable. A positive post that gains traction organically can now become part of a paid strategy, extending the reach to the brand’s benefit (big or small).

Our Take:
Mentions Boost is part of a broader, interesting shift in how platforms define inventory.
It used to be about fixed slots and placements. Here’s where ads could run, essentially. Now, inventory is being tied to user behavior itself, like what people engage with, what they see, and which conversations are getting traction. With advances in AI, platforms can better identify which of these moments are worth surfacing and amplifying, turning high-quality organic posts and interactions into scalable ad opportunities.
This also feels like a smart follow-on to X’s recent mutuals algorithm overhaul, which improved the relevance and quality of users’ feeds. By strengthening what people see organically, X is now better positioned to monetize those same interactions in a way that feels native. Good stuff all around.
