OpenAI continues to speedrun its ads business for ChatGPT.
This week, the company made ChatGPT Ads available in 31 European countries, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands and Austria.
OpenAI announced the forthcoming expansion in a blog post last week, and it’s now live.
Why This Matters:
This feels like some sort of record, right? OpenAI went from not offering ads at all to building an ad business and much of the infrastructure to support it extremely quickly. Now, following its successful US pilot, it’s expanding across 31 European countries in its largest geographic rollout to date.
OpenAI has made a few other moves over the last week or so, too. The great Anthony Higman spotted a new ChatGPT Ads Manager plugin that lets advertisers manage their ad accounts and optimize campaigns using ChatGPT as the interface. He also noted that OpenAI has added platform targeting, letting advertisers choose whether ads run on the iOS app, Android app and/or web.

Taken together, OpenAI isn’t just expanding the availability of ChatGPT Ads. It’s moving fast to fill in the features advertisers would expect from a more mature ad platform.

Here’s what Benji Shomair, OpenAI’s VP of Monetization, had to say about the expansion announcement:

Our Take:
It’s exciting to see the business continue to push ahead and develop. What stands out, though, is, again, the pace. ChatGPT Ads still feels very much like a new product, yet OpenAI is already expanding geographically and, at the same time, adding more of the controls, tools, and infrastructure advertisers want.
Sure, there are still gaps to fill, and Europe will bring its own regulatory and privacy complications. But OpenAI clearly isn’t treating the US pilot as something it needs to spend a year studying before moving forward. It’s building, learning and expanding all at once — and very, very quickly. That, in scientific terms, is pretty cool.
