ChatGPT Ads Is Now a $1 Billion-a-Year Business

ChatGPT Ads has hit $1 billion in annualized revenue run rate less than 200 days after launch, according to OpenAI. This marks a major milestone for the company’s rapidly growing advertising business (and is a big win, especially with an IPO looming).

OpenAI says the platform now has tens of thousands of advertisers and is available in more than 40 countries. Starting later today, users across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa will also be able to buy ads directly through Ads Manager. (More expansion!)

Why This Matters:

The $1 billion figure is proof that ChatGPT Ads is now a very meaningful business for OpenAI — and they got there remarkably quickly. The company has essentially gone from an early US pilot to “tens of thousands of advertisers,” more than 40 markets and a billion-dollar revenue run rate in about a half a year.

OpenAI is also explicitly positioning ads as a way to help fund broader access to ChatGPT, which is smart PR. Per company, its ad-supported free tier helps keep ChatGPT accessible to its more than 1 billion weekly active users, with ads sitting next to subscriptions, enterprise products, and API access as part of its broader business model.

There is also an interesting evolution in OpenAI’s targeting story nestled within the blog. Ads already use the context of a current conversation, but OpenAI says that, depending on a user’s country and settings, its system “may also use context from the user’s broader ChatGPT experience. This allows ads to reflect both what someone is asking about in the moment and, where enabled, their broader interests and preferences.”

Cool, right? That starts to sound more like the audience and interest-based targeting buyers are used to in other platforms.

Our Take:

We’ve written a lot about OpenAI speedrunning the development of a modern ad platform, and today’s numbers put some firm scale behind that. In a few months, OpenAI has rolled out an Ads Manager, CPC and outcome measurement, Pixel and Conversions API, product feeds, geographic and platform targeting, custom audiences and more that we probably haven’t accounted for. It now works with more than 50 tech and measurement partners.

And it’s clearly not done. OpenAI says the next phase will include additional formats, objectives, buying options and measurement capabilities, along with more “native” ways for businesses to interact with consumers inside ChatGPT. (Maybe this?)

The $1 billion milestone is impressive on its own. But the big takeaway may be just how quickly OpenAI has gone from not liking ads (I mean, this is true!), to experimenting with them, to building a global ad platform with real scale.
