Study Claims AI May Prioritize Advertisers Over Users

Is this research BS? Maybe.

Going into the weekend, a viral post on X drew attention to an April study from Princeton and the University of Washington. 

The research examines what happens when large language models face situations where company incentives conflict with user interests — specifically when AI assistants are nudged to promote sponsored products. Researchers tested frontier models, including GPT, Claude, Gemini, and Grok, across a variety of simulated scenarios, such as booking flights and suggesting financial products.

The findings suggest models may prioritize platform or advertiser incentives over user value. According to the paper, “a majority of LLMs forsake user welfare for company incentives.” This included recommending more expensive sponsored products, interrupting purchasing decisions with sponsored alternatives, and concealing unfavorable pricing comparisons.

Why This Matters:

The research was published in April, and the timing is notable given how aggressively AI platforms are now embracing advertising. OpenAI, for example, has made ads a central part of ChatGPT’s long-term business model. Just last week, the company rolled out more formal ad infrastructure, measurement capabilities, and agency and adtech partnerships. As generative AI products evolve from organic discovery, shopping, and recommendation engines into paid ones, questions around incentives and neutrality are inevitable.

This is also a fundamentally different paradigm, which is why it deserves scrutiny. Historically, users approached the open web, search engines, and social platforms knowing ads existed in those environments. AI assistants are different because they present information conversationally and as personalized, neutral guidance. That creates a potentially more influential form of advertising — one where recommendations can feel less like ads and more like trusted advice. If advertising becomes embedded in AI assistants, getting neutrality right becomes especially important. (This is the new “suitability” risk, to some degree.)

At the same time, there are legitimate questions about how applicable the research really is. The experiments used artificial scenarios where models were explicitly instructed to prioritize sponsors, which does not reflect how commercial AI systems are deployed today. Major AI platforms do not operate this way and generally enforce stricter controls around ad disclosure and recommendation logic than the paper accounts for.

We need fair, unbiased research on both the value of AI and what happens when advertising becomes part of the AI experience. Scrutiny around AI was already intensifying as companies increasingly use it to reduce or replace certain jobs. Adding advertising into that environment — something consumers already tend to distrust or dislike — will only increase concerns around incentives, transparency, and neutrality.
