OpenAI Launches Sponsored Agents for ChatGPT Ads

OpenAI’s Sponsored Agents let ChatGPT users move from an ad into a conversation with a business-sponsored AI agent.

Well, that’s cool.

OpenAI has officially introduced what they’re calling Sponsored Agents, a new ChatGPT ad experience that lets users start a conversation with a business-sponsored AI agent in ChatGPT, after clicking an ad.

The format is currently being tested with a select group of US advertisers alongside a broader expansion of OpenAI’s ad platform that includes AI campaign-management tools and new integrations with HubSpot and Shopify.

Why This Matters:

Sponsored Agents represent a fundamentally different approach to the traditional post-click ad experience. Rather than immediately sending someone to an advertiser’s website, an ad can open a clearly labeled conversation with the business inside ChatGPT.

Users can ask the agent questions about a product or service, explain what they’re looking for and eventually follow a link to the advertiser’s site. OpenAI says these sponsored conversations are distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and separate from the user’s original conversation. (Which is important, of course, to maintain trust.)

A few weeks ago, we wrote about an “Agent” campaign type that was spotted inside OpenAI’s Ads Manager. At the time, the advertiser-side tools were visible to select advertisers, but the consumer experience had not yet been confirmed. Clearly, this is that experience.

OpenAI is also expanding the infrastructure around ChatGPT Ads. Advertisers can now use natural-language prompts in ChatGPT Work to create, update and analyze campaigns through an Ads Manager plugin (we mentioned the plugin recently), while new HubSpot and Shopify integrations can bring ChatGPT Ads into your existing marketing and commerce workflows. Interoperability, baby!

Our Take:

This is the kind of ad experience many people ultimately envisioned when advertising first came to ChatGPT.

Sponsored Agents aren’t traditional digital ads dropped into a chatbot. (That’s what we’ve seen so far, for the most part.) They’re built around what makes ChatGPT different in the first place: the chat part and having a conversation.

So, instead of just clicking an ad and leaving for a website, people can actually interact with the advertiser inside ChatGPT. That’s a fundamentally different ad experience — and, if all goes well, a potentially much more interesting direction for ChatGPT Ads.
